The book is organized by color-coded time periods that correlate to the edge of each page. This color-coding means that I can easily flip to a major event of the American Revolution because those pages are all turquoise. We've found it challenging to find high-quality historical books for this age group, specifically for our daughters ages 6 and 9. This book is fantastic! Megan has captured the important historical events in American history with accuracy, relevance, and valuable perspective-taking in a high-interest format. We particularly like the activities at the end of each section, which has been great for our third grader. She has been reading the chapters independently, and then when we talk to her about them afterward we can use those suggestions as way to discuss more together. I highly recommend this book! This is a great resource to use for giving students information about major events in American History. There is also a note at the end of each chapter that gives you extra resources students and educators can use in the classroom. I will be using this book in my classroom for years to come! This book is beautifully written and designed, and Megan Forbes clearly kept teachers and young students in mind. There are useful over-arching descriptions of historical events and figures, and there are also well-researched details that aren’t found in traditional textbooks. History is complex and has all different opinions, with equality and justice in mind, Megan has put aside our stuffy one-sided textbooks and offered us a better overview of events that are important to America. These events can be unsavory in nature to our mindset, but the view point of ALL Americans must be accounted for. Old textbooks were clearly written from the victor's standpoint.
